Jug with seventeen personifications

Jug of stoneware on a high foot with a cylindrical body with slightly narrower, rounded shoulder and long neck. The C-shaped handle is attached to the neck and shoulder. Covered with a brown engobe. On the belly a broad band with in relief an impressed and applied decoration of seventeen personifications with their names above them. Depicted are Astrology, the Seven Virtues and the Nine Muses: Astrologia, Fides, Caritas, Spes, Iustitia, Prvdencia, Temperatia, Fortitvdo, Pelpomene, Tialia, Evt[?], Terpsichorie, Clio, Poli, Caliope, Erato, Vrania. Below the female figures the inscription 'BEI MEI MISTER BALDEM MENNICKIN POTENBECKER WONENDE TOTEN RAREN IN LEIDEN EN GEDOLT ANNO DVSENT 1579'. To the right of the last lady the word 'NOVEM'. The shoulder and lower part of the belly with incised panels. On the neck a band with scrollwork and lozenges. Raeren.
