About this work

On a bench, to the left, sits Anna Maria with the naked Child placed in profile at her breast, who has laid his left arm against her shoulder. She supports him with her right hand against his back and holds his right foot with her left hand. Anna holds her right forearm (the hand is missing) forward, while with her left hand she turns the pages of the book lying on her lap. Mary wears a gown with a low rectangular neckline and long wide sleeves over an undergarment; on her head a cap with a veil hanging down the back, fastened under the chin with a scarf. Anna wears a corset with split puffed sleeves and lobes, from which wide-extending sleeves and decorative sleeves emerge; the undergarment is visible at the neck and under the skirt, which is turned back on the left knee. Around her waist a knitted sash; on her head a cap with an ear-ring on each side with wings pointing backward. The ear-rings are connected by a hanging veil and on the forehead by a band with bells.
