About this work

Fragment of a strip of natural-coloured needle lace: Venise plat. Original pattern: richly branched curling vines with small, diverse flowers on an irregular open ground with one-sided picoted spindles. The motifs are made with festoon stitch where cut-outs are made with twisted stitches forming a pattern. The upper side was originally edged with a border of bobbin lace, missing due to damage. Several small fragments of the straight picot border with loops along the lower edge are still visible.
