View of the side of the Amsterdam Schouwburg on the Leidseplein, inaugurated on 15 September 1774, seen from the Leidsestraat. To the left in the background the Leidsepoort. This city theatre was built to replace the theatre on the Keizersgracht which burned down in 1772 and itself burned down in 1890. To the left in the foreground Swarte Klaas sits on his stool smoking a pipe. To the right behind him stands Prulla, another well-known street figure of that time, with her speaking trumpet.
