View of the side of the Amsterdam Schouwburg on the Leidseplein, inaugurated on 15 September 1774, seen from the Leidsestraat. In the background to the left, the Leidsepoort. This city theatre was built to replace the theatre on the Keizersgracht, which had burned down in 1772, and it itself burned down in 1890. In the foreground to the left, Swarte Klaas sits on his stool smoking a pipe. To his right stands Prulla, another well-known street figure of that time, with her speaking trumpet.
