View of the side of the Amsterdam Schouwburg on the Leidseplein, inaugurated on 15 September 1774, seen from the Leidsestraat. The Leidsepoort is visible in the left background. This city theater was built to replace the theater on the Keizersgracht that burned down in 1772 and itself burned down in 1890. In the left foreground, Swarte Klaas sits on his stool smoking a pipe. To his right stands Prulla, another well-known street figure of that time, with her speaking trumpet.
