View of the side of the Amsterdam Theatre inaugurated on 15 September 1774 on the Leidseplein, seen from the Leidsestraat. On the left in the background the Leidsepoort. This city theatre was built to replace the theatre on the Keizersgracht that burned down in 1772 and burned down itself in 1890. On the left in the foreground sits Swarte Klaas on his stool smoking a pipe. To his right stands Prulla, another well-known street figure of that time, with her speaking trumpet.
