About this work
A watchman demands money from a young man (Godefroy), who is secretly visiting his beloved (Sybille) at night. The young man reaches into his trouser pocket. The bribery scene from the second act of the comedy 'Captain Ulrich or the Deceived Avarice' by Johan van Paffenrode (1661). In the play, the avaricious character Ulrich is deceived by his wife Sybille, despite his efforts to have her guarded. Her lover Godefroy bribes the watchman. With an eight-line inscription in the margin.
