About this work

The painter Eduard declares his love to Leonoor, whose portrait he has painted. At the door stands Leonoor's jealous husband Don Pedro, who is being kept busy by the painter's apprentice. Above the door hangs a painting depicting Alexander giving the painter Apelles his mistress Campaspe as a gift. At the bottom of the margin, four-line verses in Dutch and French. Scene from the second act of the play 'The Painter by Love' by Molière.
