Peasants' War, medal struck in honor of those who gave their lives for king and fatherland

Commemorative medal for British victims of the Boer War. Bronze, E. Fuchs, 1902. The Boer War fanned nationalist feeling in Britain to new heights, too. The whole country was united in its support of a war in which 250,000 British soldiers fought in South Africa. This medal was struck in Britain after the war had been won, to commemorate the thousands of British casualties. The obverse shows a soldier with plumed helmet sheathing his sword. He symbolizes peace. On the reverse an angel holding a laurel branch kneels beside a fallen soldier. The text on the reverse reads: 'Who gave their lives for Queen and Country'. Below is the text: 'South Africa campaign 1899-1902'.
