About this work

The painter Hermanus Koekkoek with his sketchbook has arrived at the border of the devastated 'Insulinde', here referring to Lombok. Behind him, a Lombokan man holds an umbrella over his head. Barren landscape littered with skeletons and smoking ruins, vultures in the air, guarded by a soldier standing by his watchhouse. Accusation against the bloody conduct of Vetter in suppressing the uprising on Lombok in 1894. At the bottom, two texts of four lines.
