About this work

The painter Hermanus Koekkoek arrives with his sketchbook at the border of the devastated 'Insulinde', here referring to Lombok. Behind him, a Lombokese man holds a parasol over his head. A barren landscape littered with skeletons and smoking ruins, vultures in the air, guarded by a soldier standing by his guardhouse. An indictment against the bloody conduct of Vetter in suppressing the uprising on Lombok in 1894. Two four-line texts at the bottom.
