About this work
The painter Hermanus Koekkoek with his sketchbook arrived at the border of the devastated 'Insulinde', here referring to Lombok. Behind him a Lombok man holds a parasol over his head. Barren landscape strewn with skeletons and smoking ruins, vultures in the air, guarded by a soldier standing by his watchhouse. Accusation against the bloody conduct of Vetter in suppressing the uprising on Lombok in 1894. At the bottom two texts of four lines.
