About this work
In the foreground, we see two men looking out over the sea from a mountain on Nova Zembla. In the background, the ship is surrounded by ice floes; a skiff sailing ahead of the ship shoots at a polar bear, on one of the men stands on an ice floe and pushes other ice floes away with a boat hook. In the background, the Orange Islands. Opposite page 58 in: 'Warhafftige Relation. Der dreyen newen unerhörten seltzamen Schiffart so die Holländischen und Seeländischen Schiff....Anno 1594, 1595 und 1596 verricht' (1598).
