Clearing a path through the ice to the sea, 12 June 1597. Axes and spades are used to make a path through the ice over which the skiff can be dragged to the sea. In the foreground, a polar bear is being shot. Opposite page 101 in: 'True Account of the Three New, Unheard-of, Strange Voyages Performed by the Dutch and Zeeland Ships in the Years 1594, 1595, and 1596' (1598).
