Four Women and a Man

Outside on uneven ground a group of people is drawn. Far left on a slope a woman sits squatting, with eyes closed. She wears a Portuguese blouse with V-neck and long sleeves (hatte), a long wrap skirt (redda) and around the head a rolled-up cloth. The woman next to her stands somewhat back, her feet are hidden behind the slope. She also wears a wrap skirt pinned at the waist, a Portuguese blouse and a rolled-up headscarf that hangs on her shoulders. On her head stands a water jug (kalaya). Between them a sketchy start of a woman seen from behind. On the right side stands a man with his arms folded in front of the belly. He wears a wide hip-cloth (veshti, lungi), tied in a South Indian manner (as dhoti) and rolled in the waist; around his shoulders hangs a second long cloth (chadar). The woman squatting to the right in front of him wears a Portuguese blouse (hatte), a long wrap skirt (redda) and around the head a rolled-up cloth.
