Two women and a man

Outside on uneven terrain, two women are resting; the man next to them is probably talking to them. The woman on the left wears a South Indian wrap garment (selai or sari), the end of which is draped over her shoulder to the back and covers her upper body. Under the rolled-up headscarf, her pinned-up hair (condé) is visible on the left; behind her on the ground lies a carrying ring wrapped in textile, and next to it stands a water jug (kalaya). The woman in the middle wears a Portuguese blouse with a V-neck and long sleeves (hatte). Her hair is tied in a bun (condé); she holds something in her raised right hand: possibly a toothpick (dath katuwa). The man on the right wears a high-waisted knee-length hip-cloth (veshti, lungi). The man and the woman on the left are possibly from Jaffna and working in Colombo. The woman in the middle is Ceylonese or Eurasian. Sheet 44 from a sketchbook with 117 sheets.
