They are likely laborers brought from South India or Jaffna employed in earthworks. Their clothing suggests this. Dressed in a hip cloth, drawn up above the knees. A shoulder cloth leaves the right shoulder and both arms uncovered. Between her knees stands a large basket, on the rim of which her right hand rests. Her head is covered with a cloth / standing woman seen from behind. Dressed in a hip cloth reaching the calf, drawn up under the armpits (covering the breasts). With her left arm she holds a basket / standing woman, drawn diagonally from the right front. Dressed in a hip cloth reaching over the calf and a cloth wrapped around the upper body under the armpits.
