KNIL ceremonial sword with scabbard and harness

Honorary saber of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army, awarded on behalf of King William III to K.F. Schultze, Captain of the Infantry at Palembang in 1859. The yellow-gilt hilt is cast, gilded, and decorated with knobs, curls, and foliage; on the quillon, a chased relief decoration is soldered in the form of a laurel wreath around an openwork W of stamped silver; the black horn grip is wrapped with twisted silver wire, has a pommel with a scale pattern, and ends in a pommel cap in the form of a lion's head. The blade is relief-etched with the sword maker's address between floral scrolls, the inscription, the letter Z on a crowned shield, the word YZERHOUWER between floral scrolls, and the name of the recipient; the relief decoration is gilded against a blued background. The scabbard is of German silver and has an iron drag plate stamped with the letters F.K.; the mounts and suspension rings are of yellow copper.
