About this work

A soldier, full-length, facing right, holding a matchlock (a specific type of firearm) in his left hand, the barrel pointing upward, before transferring the weapon to his right hand. In his left hand, besides the matchlock, he holds a burning match. This print is part of the series of 42 hand-numbered prints of matchlockmen in the Wapenhandelinghe.
