About this work

Camp at the lower reaches of the Van Stadens River. On the left, wagons, a tent, and a campfire; on the right, an ox wagon and a herd of cattle. In the foreground, the artist Schumacher is at work. Drawing made during Hendrik Swellengrebel's second journey to the northeast of the Cape Colony, 10 September - 26 December 1776. According to the travel journal, the party arrived at the river on 18 November 1776.
