Model of the Stern of a Steam Battery

Half-model of the stern of a steam battery on the stocks, on a baseboard. The skin of the model is omitted, the construction is visible inside and out. It represents a converted line-of-battle ship: the number of decks has been reduced to the lower three, on the upper deck a superstructure with a turret on top has been added, the skin above the waterline has been made vertical, resulting in the elliptical stern being changed into a sharp stern. The sternpost has been replaced by a vertical sternpost, with a screw frame and rudder post behind it. The rudder is kept entirely below the waterline and has a rudder quadrant: the chain of the quadrant is attached to a rod that enters the hull through the skin and is there coupled to a steering quadrant. The turret is sixteen-sided, each side with a firing port, and has a flat top with a square opening; inside it is circular and fitted with rails for armor plates to close the firing ports.
