Frame model of the port half of a stern above the waterline, demonstrating the steering gear. The stern has an elliptical stern and three decks, all with their webs indicated; the upper deck is open. It has a large cross-shaped screw tunnel between the sternpost and the propeller post. Just in front of the screw tunnel stands the drum of the steering wheel on the upper deck. The steering gear, which runs just below the upper deck, is a mixture of Rapson-slide and whippletree. The lower rudder post, which is moved by the steering gear, is bent to be able to move in the space on the port side of the screw tunnel; it is not directly connected to the rudder trunk, but rotates around its own axis and the movement is transferred to the rudder trunk with two hinges. Between rails, which are placed between the screw tunnel and the ship wall, a plate goes back and forth with a bracket loosely around the rudder post, driven by the steering rope which goes over two discs on top of this plate.
