Model of Part of a Floating Dry Dock

The dock consisted of two halves, of which a part is represented by the model. It is entirely made of brass, the construction consisting of frames of angle iron, reinforced with diagonal bracing and sheet metal. Bulkheads divide the bottom into watertight compartments, which are allowed to fill with water to sink the dock; the side boxes, which widen towards the bottom, remain essentially dry and contribute to stability. The model has a steam engine with a Cornwall boiler with Galloway tubes on deck under a sunshade, which drives two centrifugal pumps for pumping out. On deck are horizontal jacks operated by winches, for righting the ship; the ship was then shored with bilge blocks and topping lifts. Scale 1:20 (scale on model).
