Tackle-Board and Sledge for Rope Making

A rope-making shop consisting of a spinning post for twisting and straining the strands and a sled for twisting the rope. The spinning post stands on a heavy baseboard and has a gear mechanism for four strands; a large cogwheel driving three smaller cogwheels in the corners is operated by a crank. The hooks to which the strands are attached are mounted on the axles of the cogwheels, so the gear mechanism ensures that the outer three rotate faster than the middle one, which also rotates in the opposite direction. The sled has four wheels; the mechanism has only one hook, with the motion of the crank transferred from a large to a small cogwheel.
