About this work

Model of a chain dredger with a horse mill located on the foredeck. The covered horse mill drives the chain via a gear mechanism with a long transmission shaft, which runs under the deck from the horse mill to the gear mechanism of the chain at the rear. The depth of the bucket, over which the chain with brass links and wooden paddles runs, is regulated with a large vertical wheel with windlass and tackle. The bucket discharges onto the aft deck and the mud is discharged via a chute along the rear; the height of the chute can be regulated with a tackle. From a windlass with a pawl on the port side, a tackle runs via the yoke of the wheel to the bucket and holds the bucket in a downward position. The horse mill can be driven with a crank.
