Model of the Lock for the Basin at Flushing

Construction model of a lock with three pairs of doors for a dock. The model shows the improvements and repair work carried out on the lock floor in 1847-1848. The lock doors are operated with long poles on capstans on the quay, so-called duwpersen. The flood gates on the sea side of the lock open outwards; they have no sluices. The other two pairs of doors are ebb gates and open inwards; the middle pair has low sluices, the inner pair has sluices just below the low water level. Between the flood gates and the middle ebb gates, a raised threshold has been installed, as well as on the lock side of the inner ebb gates. On both sides of the lock, a gangway runs just above the low water level of the outer harbor into the dock; these gangways have two underground doors operated from above by capstans. The middle doors are sluice gates and serve, together with the underground gangways or 'sewers', to keep the harbor at depth by sluicing. Scale 1:50 (scale on model).
