About this work

Optical telegraph by Antoine Lipkens, in use from 1831 to 1839 between The Hague, Rotterdam, Breda, Dongen, Helvoirt and 's-Hertogenbosch. The line was extended in 1832 to Bergen op Zoom, Bath, Ossendrecht, Waarde, Kruiningen, Heinkenszand, Arnemuiden, Vlissingen, Koudekerke and Domburg. By turning the tenon discs according to a certain pattern in horizontal or vertical position, 63 signals could be given. The telegraph was easy to install in a church tower. This model was probably used for demonstrations or exercises.
