Ship Compass

Compass in a compass case. The glass is missing. The cylindrical copper compass box is weighted with a lead ring around it, which can be adjusted in height. The gimbal ring has been replaced by an unusual suspension: the entire box with weight rests on the compass needle, which with a ball on top of a rod in the bottom of the compass case balances; a spring is attached in the rod, which absorbs vertical shocks. The rose has a transparent mica center; the main and intercardinal points are indicated and on the paper outer edge divided into eight. The compass case has a pendulum on the inside, which can be read as a clinometer through a viewing glass at the front. At the top the pendulum has the course pointer for the compass: because the compass box is suspended on a single point, it can rotate and the course must be read from the quadrant pointer, which follows the pendulum movement of the box but does not rotate.
