About this work

Compass in a gimbal ring in a wooden box with handles. The square wooden compass box is weighted with a lead weight at the bottom. On one side is a tilting sundial: it consists of a circle divided into two sets of twelve hours, which can be tilted along a 90° arc. In the center of the sundial is a gnomon with two wires that can rotate and indicate the hour on the circle with a pointer. The paper rose is decorated with animal figures and balanced at the bottom with white lacquer; the underside is a page from the Bible. Opposite the sundial is a brass strip as a pointer for the rose attached to the box; the box is also dated in pencil on the inside.
