Album with Photographs of Batavia and of the Ursuline Sisters
From the collection of Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Free to download, adapt and use — no permission needed.
Photo album in a leather cover with front and back covers of lacquer panels. The front features flowers on a trellis with butterflies circling around. The back has a decoration of flowers and leaves. The album has 24 sheets with gold edges and endpapers made of changeant paper. It contains 48 photographs of, among other things, churches, monasteries, schools, gardens, streets, an institution, and a cemetery in Batavia (Dutch East Indies). Also portraits of nuns and members of a building committee. A large part of the shots is connected to the Ursuline order of nuns, which ran a school and a children's institution in Batavia. The compiler of the album is unknown but can presumably be sought in this circle.
