About this work

Atlas carries the world on his shoulders and stands on a pedestal. To his left, Fame blows a trumpet; to the right, Neptune sits on a globe. In the foreground, seated far left, is Cybele, the personification of the earth, with a crown in the form of walls and towers on her head and a key in her hand. Beside her, Geography, personification of geography, describes a drawing board. Geography is surrounded by various measuring instruments and holds a compass. At her feet lies a lion.
