About this work

The Sleeping Peasant of Stolwijk, or the so-called Sleeping Stolk Peasant. The thatcher Dirk Klaasz de Bakker slept from 29 June 1706 to 11 January 1707 (27 weeks) and fell asleep again after being woken until 15 March 1707. Centrally, a room with the bed containing the sleeping man and several visitors. This representation is surrounded by eight smaller scenes with city views and emblems. Printed on the sheet below the plate a poem in three columns. In the main representation and in the emblems are numbers to which the satirical poem refers. Such as number 1 at the top right, upon which envy bursts from the earth and with her mist obscures the sun.
