About this work

The personification of Piety (Pietas) gives alms to a beggar. As an attribute, she holds a burning altar in her hand. In the background, expressions of pious life: visiting the sick as one of the works of mercy (right) and the performance of daily work such as weaving mats and baskets. The print has a Dutch, Latin and French inscription and is part of a twelve-part series with the subject of the degeneration of the Catholic clergy and the causes of the uprising and the Iconoclasm.
