About this work
Advertisement for the practice of the operator or surgeon J.M.P. at the Reguliersbreestraat in Amsterdam, ca. 1700. In the foreground a surgeon is busy with a stone operation on a man. On the left a hernia is set while on the right a patient with an eye ailment is helped. In the background on the left a hospital ward and on the right the pharmacy. At the entrance of the ward stands on the left a statue of Bacchus and on the right a statue of Ceres on a pedestal. Below the image in two columns a list of the skills and specialisms of the doctor.
