About this work

Deucalion and Pyrrha stand in the water of a great flood that has destroyed the earth. In the middle they kneel before an oracle in a temple. They are advised by the oracle to throw stones behind them. On the left in the foreground, they do so. The stones turn into children. Below the image, the text from Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book 1, verses 411-414.
