About this work
A cook stirs a cauldron and serves food to a group of Muslim galley slaves; the cook himself belongs to this group. Some of them sit on the ground eating. These enslaved men are identifiable as Muslims by the characteristic hairstyle (shaved head except for a tuft) they were required to wear. To the right, two sailors are in conversation with a papasso (moollah and representative of the enslaved Muslims).
