About this work
Satirical print on the dissolution of the Confederation of the Rhine after Napoleon's defeat at the Battle of Leipzig, October 1813. In the workshop of an alchemist, Napoleon is put into a large German cauldron by representatives of various European countries. The cauldron is stoked by the Dutchman and the Brit. Around the cauldron stand laughing: Frederick I, King of Württemberg; Charles XIV John of Sweden; a Prussian hussar; and others. On the left: Pope Pius VII with two measuring cups in hand, next to him Tsar Alexander I seated at a table with three other men. On the right: a Spaniard with a mortar marked 'Saragossa'.
