About this work

Emblem with an allegory of caution or restraint, referred to in the title by the obsolete term mediocrity. Depicted as a woman holding both a lamb and a lion on a leash. In the landscape behind her we see Icarus in trouble, the wax in his wings melting from the sun's heat as he falls, an unwise action. A poem is located below the image, continued on the verso.
