About this work
Emblem with an allegory of self-love depicted as a man chained to an arm and leg, to which self-love, the degree to which someone is blind to their faults and desires praise, can be measured, as the poem states. The hare stands for fear, and the rooster crows impatiently, as we are told. In the landscape, a woman looks at her reflection in the water.
