About this work
Funerary monument with a half-length portrait to the right of Scheffer. Two women in antique robes and a child mourn at a tomb in a landscape. The child is surrounded by a scythe, hourglass, and an ouroboros, a snake biting its own tail, as a mythical symbol for eternity. On the monument a text of ten lines in Dutch.
