About this work
In France there was fierce opposition to the 1689 coronation of Stadtholder William III as king of England, Scotland and Ireland. Here, the event is presented as unnatural. This explains the prince's small stature. The frogs scattered throughout the picture refer to a French epithet for the Dutch. Many French satirical prints took the form of almanac prints like this one, with an image and a printed calendar underneath.
