About this work
Julius Caesar Scaliger, also known as Giulio Cesare della Scala (1484–1558), was an Italian humanist and physicist who spent most of his life in France. His portrait bust is placed in an oval, the gaze directed to the right. Around the portrait is an architectural ornamental frame with allegorical and mythological figures. Around the oval and in the cartouche below the portrait are texts in Latin.
