About this work

Julius Caesar Scaliger, also known as Giulio Cesare della Scala (1484–1558), was an Italian humanist and naturalist who spent much of his life in France. His portrait bust is placed in an oval, the gaze directed to the right. Around the portrait, an architectural ornamental frame with allegorical and mythological figures. Texts in Latin around the oval and in the cartouche below the portrait. Below the print (on the same sheet), a text in book type consisting of 24 lines of Latin by Janus Dousa Filius.
