About this work

Allegory on the peace concluded with the Eternal Edict of 1577. The triumphal chariot of Peace, drawn by three donkeys. Seated on the chariot are female personifications of Love (Charitas), Peace (Pax) and Covenant (Foedus), and the coats of arms of Philip II, Don John of Austria, and Antwerp. Kneeling on the left are the seventeen maidens of the provinces. Old Hatred (Livor) and Self-interest (Proprium commodum) try to hinder the progress of the chariot. Behind the chariot walk the representatives of the States-General. In the background, Discord (Discordia) is being strangled in a tug-of-war between the forces of Violence (Violentia) and the People (Populus).
