About this work

Charles of Orleans (1522-1545), third and youngest son of Francis I, received in 1536 the title 'Duke of Orleans'. He married in 1539 Maria, the eldest daughter of Charles V. They would take over the government of the Netherlands from the regent Mary of Hungary. Charles of Orleans is depicted as a rider in full armor, on a horse in gallop to the left. Top left the coat of arms of France with the ducal crown, broken by the baton as younger son.
