About this work

Scene from 'Le Bât' by Jean de La Fontaine. To prove his wife's infidelity, a painter painted a donkey on his wife's pubic area so that it would fade if she had contact with her lover. However, this lover made a copy of the painting so that he could repaint it after their tryst. The addition of a saddle was a mistake that allowed the husband to discover the infidelity after all. Reproduction of a proof print with sketches in the margins.
