About this work

Scene from 'Le Savetier' by Jean de La Fontaine. A wealthy citizen lent money to a cobbler and proposed that his wife repay the debt in kind. She agrees, but involves her husband in the plot and ensures they are caught. Reproduction of a proof with sketches in the margins.
