About this work

Two women; one cuts pieces of rice cake, the other reads a book by the light of a lantern. In the background two New Year's decorations, consisting of among others fern leaves, rice cake and pine branches. The shell to which the title refers is depicted in the fan-shaped cartouche. With two poems.
