About this work
Beheading of the English King Charles I, before the Whitehall Palace in London on 30 January 1649. At the top the king's catafalque with two rows of standing European monarchs marked a-r on either side. Above the bed a portrait of the king flanked by the portraits of Thomas Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell. At the bottom the execution before the public, with four small scenes of his last days on either side.
